5. Start DISM tool
- Follow the first two steps of the above solution to open the command prompt as administrator.
- Type the following command and press Enter:
- DISM / Online / Cleaning up the image / Restoring health
- Wait until the analysis is complete.
- Restart your computer and try the update again.
The third and final debugging tool we will use is DISM. Deployment Image Servicing and Management is a tool for re-deploying a system image and resolving potential problems along the way.
Unfortunately, the DISM utility doesn’t always work on Windows 10. If this happens on your computer, you can use our special guide to solve the problem.
6. Check hard disk.
- Advanced startup (restart the computer by holding down the Shift key).
- Select Troubleshooting > Advanced Settings.
- Select the command line from the list of options.
- When the command line appears, type the following lines and press Enter after each line to run it:
- bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
- bootrec.exe /fixmbr
- bootrec.exe /fixboot
- Some users also recommend running additional chkdsk commands.
- To run these commands, you must know the drive letters of all the partitions on the disk. On the command line, type the following (but remember to use the letters that correspond to your computer’s disk partitions):
- chkdsk /r c :
- chkdsk /r d :
- This is just an example, remember you need to run the chkdsk command for each disk partition you have.
- Restart the computer and see if the problem is resolved.
If your partition is corrupt or your hard drive has some other problem, BSOD problems are very possible.
To make sure this is not the case, run the chkdsk command, which thoroughly scans your hard drive and fixes any potential problems.
7. Download the old version of the driver for the graphics card
As mentioned earlier, it’s always good to keep your drivers up-to-date, but in some rare cases, an older version of the drivers may be more effective.
Some Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000 owners have reported the IRQL NOT GREATER OR EQUAL error when using an older driver version.
Please note that this solution may work for users who do not have access to the Internet. If you don’t like the latest drivers, you can use an older version.
8. Check your RAM
RAM is often the cause of many BSoD errors, and IRQL NOT GREATER OR EQUAL is no exception. Users have reported that MemTest86+ and similar programs do not show memory errors.
Some users have reported a faulty RAM module as the cause of this problem. If you are experiencing this problem, you need to replace the RAM memory.
For some reason, the RAM module may not be compatible with the motherboard, causing an IRQL NOT GREATER OR EQUAL BSoD error.
9. Check other computer equipment
BSOD errors are usually caused by errors in RAM, but other hardware components can also cause this error.
It is quite common for a motherboard to cause an IRQL NOT HIGHER OR EQUAL error, so you need to check that it is working properly.
In addition to the motherboard, some reports indicate that a faulty hard drive or graphics card could be the cause of this error. Therefore, you should perform a thorough inspection of the equipment.
If you do not know how to do this, we strongly recommend that you take your computer to a repair shop and have it repaired.
In addition to defective devices, newly added devices can also cause problems.
If you have installed new hardware, e.g. a new hard drive, memory, graphics card or similar, it may not be compatible with your motherboard, which can cause this BSoD error.
To resolve this issue, we recommend that you replace the newly added hardware and verify that your PC works properly without it.
9. Removal of problematic software
Some tools may cause IRQL NOT GREATER OR EQUAL error, and you should remove these tools from your PC to correct this error.
Some VPN or encryption programs may cause a BSOD error. If you use any of these tools, make sure you remove them. In addition, antivirus software can often cause an IRQL error NOT HIGHER OR EQUAL.
Almost all antivirus software can cause the BSoD error. To solve this problem, it is recommended to uninstall the installed antivirus software.
To completely remove the antivirus software, we strongly recommend using one of the special uninstallers.
Most antivirus vendors offer uninstall tools on their websites that you can download and use to completely remove a particular antivirus program from your PC.
After uninstalling your antivirus software, you can try reinstalling it or installing another antivirus software instead.
Fail to completely uninstall the rest of the software on Windows 10? You can use the solutions suggested in our special guide.
11. Keeping Windows 10 up to date
BSoD errors are often caused by compatibility issues. To avoid potential problems, we strongly recommend that you update Windows 10 regularly.
Most incompatibility issues and security holes are fixed with Windows Update. So make sure your Windows 10 is updated to avoid IRQL NOT GREATER OR EQUAL errors.
If a Windows update doesn’t work on your computer, it could be a serious problem. Check out our special guide and solve the problem with ease.
12. Resetting Windows 10
- Restart the computer a few times during the boot process so that it can enter automatic recovery mode.
- Select Troubleshooting > Reset this PC.
- Select Delete All > Only the drive on which Windows is installed.
- Wait until the process is complete.
Resetting Windows 10 will delete most of the files on your C drive, so if you decide to take this step, we recommend backing up as described above.
This process deletes all files from drive C. If the problem does not go away even after resetting Windows 10, you should check your PC for faulty hardware.
The IRQL NOT LARGER OR EQUAL Blue Screen of Death error can cause many problems, but it can be fixed with one of our solutions.
We also already looked at the BSOD error irql_not_less_or_equal, so you should read that article too.
