
You probably hear it all the time when you’re working with your model train, and maybe you even have a rough idea of what a train coupler is. That little piece that comes out and connects the machines. This article gives a detailed overview of what a rail connection is, how it works, the different types and why you need to know them if you want to make your job as authentic as possible.
What is a trainman?
A railway coupling device or train coupling device is a mechanism used to connect the coaches of a train to each other. The design of these devices is regular and their importance is on the same level as the track gauge. Comfort and flexibility are optimised if the rolling stock (rail vehicles) can be coupled or uncoupled.
What are the different types of trains?
Buffer and chain
The most common compound derived from British roots, buffers and chains is still widely used. A long three-chain connection connects the hooks of the connected cars. The buffers can withstand shock loads. While this is normal for mineral cars, it was a different story for passenger cars, so improvements were made by replacing the central connection with a slewing ring that holds the cars together.
Albert Koopler
Carl Albert, former director of the Krefeld tram company, invented the Albert tyre in 1921 to solve safety problems. The model has a slotted connector with a pair of pins and a key. The cars that were to be coupled were merged and the two couplers were aligned in the same way. After placing the bolt, the wagons were removed to further align the coupling, after which a second bolt was placed. It was a blow to the narrow gauge lines and trams.
Despite their aging in the 60’s, Albert connectors are still installed in modern cars as an emergency measure to tow defective cars.
Link and pin
This connection has been made popular with the North American railways. The working principle is simple, but the system is not sufficient due to a lack of standardization.
The connector consists of a tubular body with a cylindrical element. The procedure was quite long, complex and often dangerous for poachers.
Radial bus coupler
Two types of radial compounds have been used throughout South Africa. The Johnston clutch, also known as the bell and the pink clutch, is one of the models introduced in 1873. Like the name, it worked as connectors and pins, but they were bell-shaped. The bell hook coupling introduced in 1902 is different.
Multifunctional bus coupler
Multifunctional connectors are fully automated and can connect rail vehicles without human help. They are not exactly automatic fasteners, as they check the mechanical sides. Most trains in which this type of tie rod is installed have many knots, especially those used in public transport.
What is the best railway dome?

Which connectors are used on model railways?
The model railways are mainly equipped with three types of connections.
Connection with horn hook
The connectors you received with your original products? Connector with a horn hook. They don’t look like prototype couplings. They rely on lateral pressure to keep things under control. This leads to a backup problem, because too much dependence on pressure leads to collapse.
Cupellers Rapido
Rapido connectors look like squares with a lateral neck. It’s not like a real train, but it’s been used for 30 years anyway. The first N-scale models were simply meant to be seen as toys, so they were delivered in discreet Velcro shapes. The manufacturers soon realized that this wouldn’t take much time, so they offered Rapido connectors. The couplings are standardized and widespread in the market.
Hose connections
They are more beautiful and have a more prototypical appearance. Cam couplings are a good addition to magnetic decouplers. When the trains leave, there are not too many accidents. They are produced by producers such as Kadee, Atlas, Athearn and Kato.
