In India, WhatsApp has recently authorised payments, and to facilitate the transfer of funds, this feature is based on the region’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform. About UPI payments to Whatsapp:
After 2 years of waiting in India, WhatsApp UPI Payments is released. In 2018, a Facebook chat application provided the first opportunity to introduce a payment feature in India, but it took two years for the team to gain NPCI approval. In order to adopt the most important payment applications in India, such as Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and many others, WhatsApp also introduced the payment option.
With the help of the IPU, India has built something truly unique and has opened up many opportunities that form the basis of the Indian economy for small and medium sized enterprises. The first country to do this is India. I am pleased that we have been able to support this initiative and work together on the further development of digital India. How to create WhatsApp payments:
Users must first add their bank account to the same system to initiate WhatsApp transactions. UPI mainly works with your mobile phone number and the services are available in all major banks in India. Most importantly, you can use the payment feature in WhatsApp even if you don’t have a UPI account set up with your bank, because it will create a UPI ID for you. You want to be sure of that:
- WhatsApp opens first via the application tray or home page.
- Find the menu for activity overflow (3 vertical dots in the upper right corner).
- Select a payment method.
- Click on the button Add new payment method.
- Pick something, take it and move on.
- Select the name of your bank from the list. It is preferable that this is your main account at the UPI.
- Your contact details must now be verified. Make sure the WhatsApp number you are using matches the mobile phone number under which your bank account is registered. To set up your bank account, press Confirm by SMS.
- Click Enable WhatsApp to check if the mobile network may be the network on which your account is registered.
- To set up your account, click Allow at least WhatsApp to send messages.
- For your bank, WhatsApp will check and increase all accounts linked to your mobile phone number. To complete the installation of the payments, select the one you want to use.
- To complete the creation of WhatsApp Pay, click Finish.
- You can now see the payment form on the payment page.
How to send and receive money via WhatsApp:
It is very easy and clear to send and receive money with WhatsApp. The payment option is immediately available in the chat window and the exchange goes as smoothly as possible:
- Select the contact to whom you want to transfer the money.
- Click on the Clip button in the discussion forum.
- Select a payment method.
- Select the number you want to assign (you also need to add a note).
- Enter the UPI password.
- Once the exchange is complete, you will see a confirmation message that is displayed directly in the chat window.
How to use WhatsApp pay:
A payment option will be available from the file sharing menu. After approval, by entering the payment window, users can transfer funds to the selected person’s contacts. The WhatsApp payment service works on the UPI system and no bank account information, such as the account number and IFSC code, is required to send or receive payments. You can also give money by scanning a QR code to someone who is not involved in your phone’s contacts.

WhatsApp has implemented the service in Brazil and India, but in the future this functionality will be available in Mexico, the UK, Spain and Europe. WhatsApp has worked with the five largest banks in India to facilitate VIP payments, as well as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, State Bank of India and Jio Payments Bank.
