Reader question:
Hi Wally, I read your article about testing the hard drive and RAM. I checked both and found no problems. But the screen freezes and the computer restarts when I try to play Minecraft. I’ve overclocked this Nvidia card in the past with no problems, but now I’m not sure. I was wondering if it was the graphics card. How can I check the processor, motherboard, power supply and other components for hardware errors? I mean, how can I be sure that these things are not behind the reboots. – Jesse H., Canada

Before troubleshooting a computer problem, I always recommend analyzing and resolving the underlying issues that affect the health and performance of your PC:

  • Step 1: Download the PC recovery and optimization program (WinThruster for Win 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000 – Microsoft Gold Certified).
  • Step Two: Click on the Start scan button to detect problems in the Windows registry that may be causing PC problems.
  • Step Three: Click the Fix All button to fix all issues.

Setting up automatic weekly (or daily) scans will help prevent system problems and keep your PC running smoothly.

Wally’s reply: Hi Jesse, it is true that sometimes just testing the hard drive and memory is not enough to diagnose blue screen errors and system crashes that can be caused by hardware failures. Sometimes you have to go a step further and check almost every device.

With the exception of modern hard drives with SMART protocol, hardware components do not have built-in diagnostics. However, we can use various tools and techniques to verify them.

Your computer may come with several built-in diagnostic tests. Refer to your computer’s PDF manual to learn how to use them. You can also simply restart the computer and repeatedly press Esc, F8, F2, F11 or F12 to display additional options, including diagnostic tests.

How do I run diagnostic tests on the GPU, CPU and other computer components?

Causes of equipment failure

In general, hardware components break down due to heat. Others fail due to manufacturing defects (usually discovered during the warranty period).

You can read these instructions by following this link.

How do I perform a CPU/Processor diagnostic test?

We will test the processor with a stress test software.

Stress testing software tests stability by attempting to cause a processor to fail, revealing its vulnerability.

If your computer is very hot, check the fans first. Only perform stress tests when the fans of CPU, PSU and GPU are running. You can use HWMonitor to check the temperature of your computer.

If your computer uses an Intel processor, you can use the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool to perform a stress test on the processor.

If you are using AMD, you can test the processor with another stress testing software like Prime95.

How do I run a diagnostic test on my GPU/graphical card?

We will test the GPU with a stress test software.

Stress tests are used to test the stability of software by trying to force a GPU to fail and expose its vulnerability.

If your computer is very hot, check the fans first. Perform the stress tests only when the CPU, PSU and GPU fans are running. You can use HWMonitor to check the temperature of your computer.

GpuMemTest can be used to test the memory of the graphics card. Take it out.

Furmark tests the graphics card and memory. The FurMark is also available for some motherboard manufacturers.

  • FurMark ROG Edition – FurMark ROG Edition comes with advanced stress testing and an artifact scanner based on OpenGL and Vulkan.
  • MSI Kombustor is MSI’s exclusive reference tool.
  • EVGA OC Scanner X is an essential tool for any EVGA GeForce card.

How do I perform a diagnostic test on the power unit/power supply?

We will also test this component using stress testing software.

If your computer is very hot, check the fans first. Perform stress tests only when the CPU and PSU fans are operating. You can use HWMonitor to check the temperature of your computer.

OCCT is the essential software for testing various components, including the power supply unit (PSU). The OCCT can also test the CPU and GPU.

Is your PC healthy?

I always recommend my readers to regularly use a reliable registry cleaner and optimizer like WinThruster or CCleaner. Most of the problems that occur can be attributed to a damaged and bloated registry.
