When you first download TikTok onto your device, the app looks for parental controls to help you control your child’s access to the app. Once you have it installed, you can set up these controls by tapping on the settings icon in the app, and then selecting the “Parental Access” option. If you haven’t set up these controls yet, it’s time to do so.

If it’s a new year, it usually means it’s time to buckle up for another year of social media controversies. As the Facebook-owned video app TikTok has been released in India, reports have surfaced about those who have received abusive and inappropriate content on the app.

TikTok, a video-sharing app that has been around for years, has now been released on iOS and Android. It allows users to post and watch short videos, which they can transform into GIFs, using stickers, filters, and other effects.

When we talk about cyber security, we always think about parental controls. TikTok is an app aimed at twelve year olds, and at first glance you might say it’s suitable for teenagers. While this may be true, sometimes short videos uploaded can be too strong or explicit for teens. TikTok offers parents or guardians of young TikTok users the opportunity to ensure that the content their children receive is safe and age-appropriate. Parents can also monitor the use of hours from the app. You can set up parental controls on TikTok in the following ways:

  1. A married couple
  2. Screen time control
  3. Using the restricted mode

The way to activate the settings is the same for Android and Apple phones. I will explain in more detail how you can monitor your child’s activity in TikTok. TikTok relegates parental control features to the Digital Wellness section. See also: How to protect your TikTok account

Pair

With this device, TikTok wants to show parents of young users that they are aware of TikTok’s ability to have a negative impact on a child. As a parent, you should have your own account before getting involved in the couple’s affairs. If you do this with your teen, explain why it’s so important. Follow the steps below to activate it:

  1. Open the application on your phone and log in with your credentials. Do the same with your teen’s phone.
  2. Open your profile tab with the I button in the bottom right corner.
  3. When it opens, click on the button with the three dots in the top right corner. The Settings and Privacy screen appears.
  4. In the General section, click Digital Wellbeing.
  5. Then select Married Couple, which is off by default, and all other options.
  6. When they ask who uses the TikTok account, choose parent for themselves and teen for them.
  7. Your application opens the Keep TikTok Family section. Click on Next.
  8. QR (Quick Response, black and white) is displayed on the screen. Have your teen use the camera on his phone to scan. Your account will now be linked to their account. If the teen disables this feature, the adult will receive a notification.

It is important that the couple make the custodial parent co-owner of the account. They can report accounts, comments or users that they feel are detrimental to a teen’s well-being. The pair also addresses the following two functions:

Screen time control

The steps are essentially the same as in the previous section, except you use the app for your child’s phone (or your own phone if you have family pairing enabled). Go to General and click on Digital well-being. Then choose Maintain screen time. Press the red Activate Timing key on the display. Set a password so you can control how long your child uses the application. The setting is then activated.

Use of restricted mode

This is a very important parameter. If you want TikTok to filter out inappropriate content for your target audience (teens), you need to enable this feature. TikTok has its own means of reporting such content, but has not yet explained to its users how it does so. The steps are very similar to those described in the previous two chapters, but I will highlight them for simplicity: Me > Settings > General > Digital well-being > Restricted mode. If you set a password when you enabled screen time, you will not be asked to set another password here. With the TikTok app, children are able to record themselves singing or dancing, lip-syncing or lip-synching to their favorite music and songs. These videos are uploaded to the app and are viewed by other users. The app has become a very addictive area of the digital world, causing even parents to get caught up in this digital age. It is important that parents become aware of this issue and set some rules for their child to limit their use of the app.. Read more about tiktok restricted mode off and let us know what you think.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you childproof TikTok?

I know that setting up a “Family” account on TikTok is a lot of work, but that nagging feeling that your kid might come across something inappropriate can make it difficult to stay on top of it. If you don’t want to spend the time to set up Family accounts, here are some tips to help you out. TikTok is a popular social media app that allows users to create their own videos. The app also comes with parental controls that allow parents to set limits on how young children can use the app.

What is restricted mode on TikTok?

For the sake of parent’s peace of mind, some social media apps allow you to restrict what your children can do on them. For example, you can make sure your child only sees content he is old enough to see. This is a feature on Facebook Messenger Kids, and on Twitter, you can set a similar restriction for your child’s account. As a parent, it can be a challenge to keep up with all of the new, addictive apps that children are using. Even a few days after download, a new app can be inadvertently downloaded by your kid or shared with a friend. TikTok is one of those apps that periodically pop up in your child’s app drawer. It’s a social media app that lets kids create videos with music and text, and it’s been a big hit with teens. Not surprisingly, some of the content that kids share with their friends is not exactly appropriate.

Is there a kid friendly version of TikTok?

TikTok is an app that lets you make music videos with different visual effects and filters. It’s similar in function to other social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat, but it does have one unique feature. In fact, it’s a lot like TikTok that kids love: TikTok is a wildly popular app that allows its users to create their own short videos as well as share them with friends. These videos can be funny, silly, and even educational, but they are most often short and single-purpose.
