A couple of days ago I was wondering why Steam Chat could not upload or send images. It turns out that this is a known bug which was recently fixed in the latest version of Steam Client.

Hey guys, I have just started using Steam Chat and the first thing I noticed was that there is no image upload or sending functions. However, this feature is available on other messengers, like WhatsApp and iMessage. So, is it a bug or an intentional feature? Let me know your thoughts.

It’s easy for users to upload images to Steam chats, and I’d like to share with you how I solved the problem. The workaround is to simply close Steam Chat and then open it again.

The full error message is as follows: The download couldn’t begin: The image could not be downloaded. If you encounter such an error, here are some tips on how to correct it.

What can I do if I can’t upload an image to Steam Chat?

  1. Turn off the steam.
  2. Using Steam online
  3. Turn off compact friends list and chat navigation
  4. Disable the firewall
  5. Start Steam as an administrator
  6. Update Steam and disable antivirus
  7. Sending images via a third-party host
  8. Use a different voice chat application

1. Steam output

  1. Start Steam and click on your profile name in the top right corner.
  2. Select Output account.
  3. Then close Steam and restart it.
  4. Log in with your Steam account and see if you can send images via Steam chat.

One way to fix this error is to log out of your Steam account in the Steam client and log back in. It seems to have worked for many users whose image upload error failed.

2. Use of Steam Online

  1. Log in to the Steam web client.
  2. Enter the special security code, if necessary.
  3. Click Chat to open the chat window.
  4. Select your friend and upload the photo you want to send.
  5. That’s it! You should be able to send images via the Steam web chat client if the Steam desktop client is not patched.

You can access your Steam account online via a web browser. Even if you can’t send and upload images through the Steam desktop client, you can still do so through the Steam web client.

3. Disable compact friends list and chat view

  1. The steam that flows.
  2. Tap Friends and chat at the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  3. In the Friends and Chat window, click Settings (the cog icon).
  4. In the Preferences window, click the Size and Scale tab.
  5. Make sure that the option Compact view of friends list and chat is disabled.
  6. Close the settings window. Shut down Steam and restart it.
  7. Try reloading the image and see if that fixes the error.

To improve gameplay in chats, Steam has added a compact friends list and a chat view option in the chat settings. However, this feature has also been known to cause an error when downloading images on Steam. This function is disabled by default. If you turn it on accidentally or intentionally, try to turn it off.

4. Disable firewall

  1. Click the Start button and go to Settings.
  2. Select Update and Security.
  3. Click Windows Security and select Firewall and Network Security.
  4. Select your network and disable the firewall.

Also check your firewall security. A firewall can incorrectly mark a connection and block access. Try disabling the firewall for a while and see if you can download the images.

5. Launch Steam as administrator

  1. Type Steam into the Cortana search bar.
  2. Right-click on Steam and select Run as administrator.
  3. Open Steam Chat and upload an image.
  4. See if there’s any improvement.

Exit Steam and try to run the Steam client with administrator privileges by following the steps above.

6. Update Steam and disable antivirus

  1. Start Steam and click on Steam.
  2. Select Check for Steam client updates.

If your antivirus software is blocking the connection to the Steam server for any reason, this may cause an error when downloading the image. Switch off the antivirus program for a while and see if there is any improvement.

7. Sending images via a third-party host

This is not a patch, but a workaround until Steam fixes the problem.  You can try uploading images to a public image hosting site like Imgur or Tinypic, etc. Upload images to websites and share the link to the image in your chat. This is useful when you want to share a photo with a friend immediately.A lot of people have been reporting that they can’t upload images to the Steam Chat and or send images from the Steam Chat. A few people have said that they can upload images but not send them. Some users have also said that they can send images but they can’t receive any images. I have tried using both the client and the web version but neither of them can upload or send images. I have also tried for both clients and web and none of them can upload or send images..
