Xiaomi, or Mi for short, is at the forefront of revolutionary innovation. In a very short time, it has managed to capture a significant market share among Android users worldwide. Xiaomi targets high-end buyers with its Mi brand and has a sub-brand, Redmi, for budget-conscious buyers.
The Mi 11 was unveiled at the very beginning of 2021. However, the Mi 11 Ultra, the company’s most versatile device, was unveiled in early April 2021. Let’s start with the build and style of the Mi 11 Ultra.
Stunning display and design
The screen is surrounded by an aluminum frame with a glossy finish. The edges of the device taper outward. The corners have a non-standard camber that protects the aircraft from bumps and small falls during turns. The bottom edge is flattened, and for the first time we see a dual SIM card slot on the bottom, as well as the main microphone. Then there’s the USB Type-C charging port and the cutouts for the main speaker, which looks like a sound wave. On the top edge is another speaker, this time from Harman Kardon with the usual notch. It also has a microphone and an optional infrared blaster for remote control of household appliances.
Setting the camera of the Mi 11 Ultra
The back is smooth ceramic, which looks and feels better than plastic, but fingerprints spoil the flawless look of the device. The main feature that stands out on the back is the camera unit, a large camera that takes up almost the entire width of the phone. This is in stark contrast to phones from other major manufacturers that have the camera clusters on one side, usually in the left or center corner.
Why across the board? There’s definitely a significant bump (3.7mm) on the strap, but aside from the cameras, it also has a tiny (1.1-inch) AMOLED touchscreen next to the camera. Used to display notifications, battery level, date and time. A nice feature when the device is facing down.
The design is properly waterproof with an IP68 rating, although we don’t recommend trying and testing it. (Unless you’re a lifeguard! Emoji wink).
You may be surprised when you assemble the receiver. The Gorilla Glass Victus panel protects a 6.81-inch AMOLED panel with 1440 x 3200 resolution, 20:9 ratio, Quad Curved, QuadHD+, certified A+ by Display Mate. The 120Hz refresh rate panel is HDR10+ certified, supports Dolby Vision and can display a billion colors. The refresh rate varies dynamically from 30, 60, 90 and 120 Hz depending on the content being displayed. However, the biggest advantage of this screen is its brightness, which reaches 1700 nits. Finally, there is an optical fingerprint sensor under the screen that is very responsive and reliable. Let’s take a break to let this all fall into place.

Perhaps only Samsung can match the image quality and color reproduction of the Mi 11 Ultra smartphone. The Mi Ultra’s advertised screen even beats the Samsung S21 Ultra by a few points, with a maximum brightness of 1700 nits and an average brightness of 900 nits, and a touchscreen sampling rate of 480 Hz. The blue cast that usually occurs with illuminated signs is also absent. Overall, the Mi 11 Ultra’s screen won’t leave you indifferent.
Software for camera and trajectory split
Smartphones of this era tend to make DSLRs and standalone digital cameras obsolete. Their performance may not yet reach the standards of Canon and Nikon, but with each iteration, smartphone manufacturers are trying to match the performance of selfie cameras. LG has been testing the waters in this area with the V-Series. Unfortunately, they have decided to withdraw from the smartphone market. But year after year, Samsung and Apple’s phones become more and more advanced. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is no exception, with an impressive triple camera that uses large sensors to capture lifelike images and studio-level cinematic videos.

On the back, we see a 50MP wide-angle sensor from Samsung, called GN2, which will make its debut in the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. It’s f/2.0. The sensor features bidirectional dual-pixel autofocus and optical image stabilization.
Then we have a 48MP telephoto lens with a Sony IMX 586 sensor with an aperture of f/4.1 that uses four-layer color filter technology. This lens offers 5x optical zoom and features optical image stabilization with autofocus. The large 5x optical zoom is made possible by the placement of the periscope lenses.
This already impressive image is rounded out by a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens that offers a viewing angle of nearly 130 degrees. The aperture is f/2.2 and there is also autofocus, but no image stabilization.

Other elements of the camera are the 1.1 screen, which we already mentioned. You can also use it to frame photos if you want to take selfies from behind. Laser transmitter/receiver and flash with three LEDs that light up brightly when you shoot with flash. For selfies on the front, there’s a 20MP lens that uses Samsung’s sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. This sensor also uses four-layer color filter technology, but has no autofocus.

8K video recording and Pro mode on all three lenses
The camera app is detailed and includes all the standard features found on high-end smartphones. You can choose from several modes, and digital (hybrid) magnification is allowed up to 120x. That’s a lot, but the Mi 11 Ultra’s maximum magnified image quality is inferior to the competition. It is best to use the optical zoom whenever possible. The high-resolution 48MP sensor lets you crop your subject later with your favorite editing software.
A unique addition is the ability to shoot with each of the three lenses separately. For photographers, there is a Pro mode that allows you to control the shooting process. Sliders allow you to change the light temperature, manual focus, shutter speed and ISO control. The Pro mode is detailed enough to be able to take photos again with all three cameras separately. Night mode is available on all cameras individually, as are various astrophotography modes.

The images show excellent detail and intelligent, natural processing. Even in low light there is virtually no noise, and colours are vivid and realistic, with a perfect balance between saturation and realism. HDR works perfectly, but sometimes the exposure behaves erratically. However, the camera performance is sometimes unstable, which Xiaomi may be able to fix with an OTA update in the future. The macro mode needs to be refined, as the macro zoom is not sufficient to capture the finer details of macro photography.

Night mode performance is excellent compared to the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. Shadows are much more pronounced with sharp edges, and dark areas are very detailed. Detail is also improved in wide-angle and magnified images. However, the quality is reduced if the image is enlarged more than 2x in low light conditions, as the noise increases considerably. Warm tones in low light shooting are brighter than those of the S21 Ultra.

With the Mi 11 Ultra, recording video is a pleasure. All three lenses allow for 8K videos, and slow-motion shots, while seemingly too slow, deliver accurate colors and contrasts. The built-in camera application has several modes that allow you to add cinematic filters to your video footage. However, given the size of the high-resolution video files, the maximum amount of RAM and storage space needs to be watched, as there is no SD card option here and constantly accessing cloud storage to free up space on the device can be a real pain.
Recording power and battery life
The Mi 11 Ultra is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, which is manufactured using a 5nm process. All Kryo 680 cores are optimized for the best performance of any smartphone with the same processor. We have 1 core running at 2.84 GHz, 3 cores running at 2.42 GHz and 4 cores running at 1.80 GHz. The Adreno 660 GPU is responsible for the graphics. We see different RAM and storage combinations, starting with 8 GB paired with 256 GB, 12 GB RAM with 256 GB and the highest option, 12 GB RAM with 512 GB. The memory is UFS 3.1 compatible.

The Antutu benchmark results are excellent for the Mi 11 Ultra. Although performance declines in repeated tests, it still outperforms its closest competitor, the Galaxy S21 Ultra, averaging 50,000 points in each successive test. The performance of the optimized processor is 25% faster than the Snapdragon 865 series, and the GPU gets a 35% increase. Multitasking is not a problem and resource-intensive applications can run simultaneously on split screens without any issues.
In terms of gaming performance, the Mi 11 Ultra meets all requirements except for heat dissipation. The temperature does rise, but not to an unpleasant level and performance is not affected. This is good news and means that the thermal power is sufficient to not strangle the chip and affect performance. Perhaps only because of the Black Shark series, Xiaomi decided not to add physical power buttons.
It seems that Xiaomi has taken the Samsung S21 Ultra and created the Mi 11 Ultra, improving performance across the board. Why? The battery is the same 5,000mAh lithium polymer battery as the S21 Ultra, but it comes with a 67W quick charger. Charging time is lower, 40 minutes for a full charge, compared to 70 minutes for Samsung, which didn’t even bother to put a charger in the box. The Mi 11 Ultra supports dual wired and wireless charging, as well as NFC combined with Bluetooth 5.2.

Inspired finishing
The Xiaomi 11 Ultra is arguably the device that can best compete with the flagships from Samsung and Apple. Apart from a few drawbacks, such as the poor quality of the macro and selfie camera, some heating issues and the self-imposed restriction to stick to the MIUI 12 UI (not really a drawback, but it’s bloated stock and an extra burden on the processor and RAM), it has everything you’d expect.
There is probably no other camera in the world today that can match it in terms of camera quality. It outshines the S21 Ultra in most features and, at a generally competitive price, could easily surpass the old workhorses and fill the void left by Huawei as the smartphone that rules the world (for now). At the time of writing, it is number one in the DXOmark world rankings.
If you’re looking for a smartphone designed for the future, with plenty of photography features and no compromises on performance, this is your phone. The design is nothing like this: Ceramic body and metal frame, durable Gorilla Victus glass and IP68 sealing. The huge 6.8 diagonal curved screen makes it a pleasure to use. The screen on the back is a gimmick, but it’s a nice touch that sets the device apart, and it’s perfect for selfies with the main camera.
Gamers will love the 120Hz panel that supports new games and the ultra-sensitive 480Hz touchscreen. The extra processor, clocked by the flagship’s Snapdragon 888 processor, with 12GB of RAM and plenty of storage, will be useful for gamers. The fastest chip to date gives the phone a lot of options for online and offline (cloud) gaming.
